ANGEL'S
COCKAPOO CORNER Est. 1990
Raising and Care
Obedience/Training
This topic is one that is ongoing and we could talk about forever. There's a mountain of information out there on it but most will subscribe to the 7 basic commands: Sit, Stay, Come, Down, Off, Leave it, and Heel. I've included some videos below that I happen to like, and should get you started. There are also many great obedience schools out there too, but we were always a DIY family so give some of these a shot; they work--especially with smarter dogs like cockapoos! ;)
Exercise
This is key to having a well behaved dog. They're a lot like children in that they just need to get out and runaround! You'll notice the temperament this breed is known for with regular exercise. Should get about 30-60 minutes a day--more if you can or want. *Will often have to potty shortly after exercise*. But if you take them on 2 - 15 minute walks per day, that would be probably do you both good, right? Be sure and let them sniff and explore, this helps stimulate them in so many ways and also wears them out!
Diet
Again; another topic with a lot of controversial facts but mainly because not all cockapoos are created equal. Like people, some have more sensitive stomachs than others. There's a lot of information out there, but generally it's a good idea to follow a higher quality grain free diet. Most common causes for allergies and irritation are typically lower quality food with beef, eggs, dairy, and gluten. If your cockapoo should be one who's prone to ear infections, your vet might advise switching to a hypoallergenic diet, which can be good for this breed unilaterally anyway. Ask me and I can recommend some good ones.
Hygiene
For this one, your furry friend isn't too difficult to deal with. Like some of the long haired dogs out there and dual coated dogs where you'll have hair on everything. Cockapoos are pretty low maintenance. Biweekly brushing is sufficient to keep fur from getting matted. But this is a relaxing experience for most dogs, and you may find it calming as well so more often doesn't hurt either! Dental care should be done daily, like humans. 3x a week minimum to remove plaque and tarter. Bathing depends mostly on the dog's lifestyle. Does he live out in the country and play in the dirt? Or the city? Generally every 4-6 weeks you should take to the groomers. But work with your puppy and and see what works for you and your lifestyle! All part of the fun!
